The 3rd Session of Forest Culture Seminar

The third session of Forest Culture Seminar was held in Lin’an, Zhejiang Province in October 21 23 2009, with Beijing Forestry University, Zhejiang Forestry University, IWCS (International Wood Culture Society), and AGA(Asia Green-Culture Association) being the co-organizers.

There were more than fifty nine scholars from twelve organizations participated the seminar, the organizations are: State Forestry Administration, IWCS, AGA, Chinese Academy of Forestry, South China Agricultural University, Nanjing Forestry University, Zhejiang Academy of Forestry, Zhejiang Forestry University, Shanghai Normal University, Zhejiang Normal University, Central South Forestry University, and Beijing Forestry University.

As one of the main organizers of the seminar, Professor Fang Wei, vice president of Zhejiang Forestry University addressed at the opening ceremony, and welcomed delegates to Lin'an, introduced the institutional settings and main achievements on forest culture studies in Zhejiang Forestry University, and expounded his views on the researches of bamboo culture, tea culture.

Editorial director of Beijing Forestry University, Dr. Yan Shuai on behalf of the chief editor of "Beijing Forestry University (Social Sciences Edition)" Professor Wu Bin, hosted the opening ceremony , firstly reviewed first two sessions, and then introduced the organizing academic activities, provision of the relevant column, publishing research papers in order to promote the study of forest culture by the team of "Beijing Forestry University (Social Sciences Edition)".

Twenty five participants presented their works on three themes: 1) Forest culture, including culture on ecology, behavior, animals and plants, recreation, folk custom, and forest utilization. 2) Forestry history, including history on ecological resources, cultivation and management of forest, forest utilization, gardening and landscape, and others related to forest. 3) Laws on forest and environment, including research on the legal security of tenure reform, and legislative proposals to modify the forest law and environmental law.

The following characteristics on the study of forest culture could be seen in the seminar:

1) The new sub discipline on the study of forest culture appeared, for example some scholars proposed the study of psychological quality of forest environment and ecological aesthetic psychology;

2) Pay more attention to the important role of traditional culture in the transmission of forest culture, such as the methods to solve the contradiction between worship and the utilization in ethnic groups;

3) The study on forest culture is continued, and the level of which is increased. For instance, some scholar classified the forest culture products, and proposed the initial plans to build China as a forestry country;

4) The construction of China's first pilot forest cultures village was demonstrated, and the construction of urban and network of rural villages with forest cultures were proposed.

Meanwhile the topics such as forest culture and forest management, forest and religion, regional forest culture, and the role of forest culture in the construction of ecological civilization were also involved in the seminar. Experts made the positive and beneficial proposals for the later study of forest culture and next Forest Culture Seminar, and are expecting the involving of scholars in many other disciplines into the study of forest culture.

Undoubtedly the success of the seminar broadened the thoughts for the later research on forest culture, such as research on forest and mental health, forest and literature art, forest and drawing, forest and music, calling on more scholars from multiple disciplines involving to the research on forest culture.
