The 5th Session of Forest Culture Seminar

The fifth session of Forest Culture Seminar was held in Hailar District of Hulunbuir City in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in July 14-16 2013, with Beijing Forestry University, IWCS (International Wood Culture Society), AGA(Asia Green-Culture Association) and Hulunbuir College being the co-organizers.

There were more than fifty scholars from thirteen organizations participated the seminar, the organizations are: State Forestry Planning and Design Institute of Forest Products Industry, China National Bamboo Research Center, Institute for the History of Natural Sciences in the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Institute of Botany in the Chinese Academy of Sciences, South China Agricultural University, Nanjing Forestry University, Zhejiang Normal University, Zhejiang A&F University, Jiangxi Environmental Engineering Vocational College, Beijing Forestry University, Hulunbuir College, IWCS and AGA.

Participants had wonderful presentations on six themes: ecological civilization, forest culture, forestry history, the issues on the laws of forest and environment, pastureland culture, and ecological and environmental psychology. The presentations in the seminar interpreted history and modern forest culture from the view of forest, provide broad research ideas for forest culture and human’s sustainable development, and fully embody four fundamental characteristics of forest culture, i. e. ecological, national, regional and humanity characters. Forest has subtle influence on nature, history and culture. Forest culture is the core content of ecological culture, and it is a phenomenon of civilization formed in the long-term coexistence of human being and forest.

The microscopic aspects on the construction of forest culture and forestry history were also described, such as cultural values and ecological effects of forest landscape, and the history of forestry research in various historical periods;

Grassland researchers from Hulunbuir of Inner Mongolia analyzed the customs and habits of inhabitants in the prairies from ecological ethics and cultural perspective combining with the construction of ecological civilization in China, which has special ethnic characteristics and worth academic attention.

The scholars expressed their views freely in the seminar. The pathways, contents and methods on the construction of forest culture were discussed lively combined with the practice of ecological civilization in China.

Compared to the previous seminars, more people began to seek the essence of forest culture in various ethnics of China. More scholars realized: only national unique one would be recognized by the world. Forest culture is essentially a traditional culture; it can be developed in long-term only if it has roots in the nation. Only the embedded value of the national traditional forest culture is explored and integrated with modern civilization, then the embedded value will play its due role in the building of the modem ecological civilization society

Meanwhile, delegates suggested that a national committee for the Forest Culture Seminar should be established while Beijing Forestry University can be as the main organizer in order to guarantee the continuous held of Forest Culture Seminar, which enlarges the influence of the Seminar from the organizational system and attracts more scholars to join the research on forest culture.

Party secretary, Professor Wu Bin, and President, Professor Song Weiming in Beijing Forestry University paid high attentions to this seminar, and listened the status of preparations in several times, and gave the full support to the success of the seminar.
