The "GrassRoots" Volunteer Team from the College of Grassland Science at BFU recently organized an eco-education event at Beijing's 768 Factory Community. By combining cultural heritage, ecological education, and hands-on activities, the initiative aimed to foster environmental stewardship among youth.

Coinciding with China's Dragon Head Raising Festival, a traditional celebration marking the arrival of spring, volunteers drew parallels between folklore rituals and grassland ecology. Just as the dragon symbolizes renewal, plants awaken ecosystems each spring. Through animations and interactive sessions, children learned how native plants support biodiversity and soil health.

During a "Grassland Botany Adventure" session, participants transformed into junior ecologists, engaging in a treasure hunt-style exploration to identify plant species. They discussed adaptive traits such as drought-resistant roots and seasonal growth patterns. The group then crafted cardboard models of grassland flora to form their dream prairie. "I promise to protect every blade of grass!", "I will recycle and reduce waste!", and "Let's grow more green guardians together!" Students solemnly signing environmental pledges, committing to protect and care for their community environment.

The initiative engaged over 20 children who made more than 30 ecological art pieces and over 40 environmental pledges. Moving forward, the College plans to expand its partnerships with the community through regular workshops to turn ecological knowledge into daily action of the community.
