New Progress in the Research Field of Treated Wastewater Irrigation made by the College of Environmental Science & Engineering

Recently, the research group led by Professor Ma Weifang of the College of Environmental Science & Engineering has made new progress in the research on fate, bio-metabolism and environmental risk of low-ring and high-ringpolycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs) in a water-soil-ryegrass multi-media system, under long-term treated wastewater irrigation condition. The latest research results showed that the fate of PAHs in water-soil-ryegrass multi-media system mainly includes soil adsorption, biodegradation, rhizosphere effect, volatilization, osmosis and plant absorption; however, there were significant differences in the fate and environmental risk between Nap and BaP, and the environmental risk level of BaP was significantly higher than that of Nap, which was close to its threshold.

To solve the problem of water scarcity in urban areas from the aspect of irrigation in the long term, strategies such as improving the quality of treated wastewater as well as increasing the effect of the rhizosphere and microbial degradation are put forward based on the results of this study.

Due to a scarcity of water resources and an increase in green space, treated wastewater irrigation (TWI) has emerged as a critical approach for alleviating water shortages in garden landscapes; However, there are trace toxic and harmful pollutants in the treated wastewater, which enters the water soil plant multi-media system after irrigation, resulting in different environmental risks to plants, soil, groundwater and microbial community structure. Therefore, it is necessary to know the fate and biological metabolic characteristics of PAHs, persistent trace organic pollutants with high detection frequency and concentration and high toxicity, and to evaluate the health and ecological risks to the environment caused by long-term garden irrigation with treated wastewater.

The research results “Fate of PAHs in treated wastewater reused as irrigation water: Environmental risks in water-soil-ryegrass multimedia system” which focuses on the fate of low and high cyclic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soil-water-ryegrass multi-media system and environmental risk assessment in treated wastewater garden irrigation was published in the top journal of environmental area Journal of Hazardous Materials (impact factor: 10.588) with the first author Ma Jiaman, a graduate student at the College of Environmental Science & Engineering, and signature unit of the first author is BFU.
