Delegates at the 72nd annual conference of the International Association of Horticultural Producers have unanimously agreed on Sep 30 that the 2024 World Horticultural Exposition shall be held in the City of Chengdu in China. Due to the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic, the meeting was held via teleconference on the Internet. The Chairman and the Sectary General of the AIPH and over 150 delegates from its membership organizations attended the meeting. The China Flower Association and Chengdu participated in the conference as the bidding candidate. A specialist advisory team composed of experts from the School of Landscape Architecture (SLA) in Beijing Forestry University (BFU) and the Chengdu Park Urban Development Research Institute has been playing an active role throughout the entire bidding process.
Reports by BFU Poverty-alleviating Staff Dispatched to the Horqin Right Front Banner in Inner Mongolia concluded on October 10 in the University, which also marked the successful organization of the first Poverty Alleviation through Education Forum. Wang Hongyuan, Secretary of BFU CPC Committee, Sun Xinli, Deputy Secretary of BFU CPC Committee and Vice President Zou Guohui, together with Wu Yanlei, director of Poverty Alleviation Department of the Development Planning Department of the Ministry of Education, and Li Zhenlin, Deputy Secretary of the Banner Committee of Horqin Right Front Bannerand head of the People’s Government of Horqin Right Front Banner, attended the meeting. The directors of all functional departments and colleges (departments) of the University, all members of the first group of volunteer teachers, all members of the new graduate student volunteer group, faculty representatives and student representatives attended the meeting. The second batch volunteer teachers to Horqin Right Front Banner attended the meeting online.
Grand celebration kicked off on October 16th on BFU campus to mark its 68th anniversary. Featuring “Talent Nurture & Historic Responsibility” as the central theme, the ceremony consisted of 3 parts: “Previous Contributions of BFU,” “Personages of BFU” and “the Future of BFU”. The celebration took a holistic survey of the remarkable achievements the University has made in serving the national development strategy through featuring the unyielding morale that had been passed down from generation after generation of BFU students and faculty. Conference was convened on October 16 on BFU campus, in which participants exchanges what each had gained from the important message delivered by President Xi Jinping at the Symposium on Ecological Protection and High-quality Development of the Yellow River Basin. On the afternoon of October 17th, “The Old Summer Palace Research Institute of Beijing Forestry University (BFU)” was officially unveiled at the founding ceremony of the Old Summer Palace Research University Alliance and the 1st University Research Achievements Exhibition. On October 20th, Sanming Revolutionary Stories report conference was held in BFU, which was like depicting a picture of red-flag fluttering in the wind. On October 24th, colleges and universities in Beijing held the founding conference of the union of education through practice at Jiufeng Experimental Forest Farm of BFU. A theme concert entitled “Historical Mission in Talents Nurturing” debuted at mid-day October 26 on the University’s recently-unveiled landmark view—the Heart of Forests— as part of the series events organized to celebrate BFU’s 68th anniversary. CPC Secretary Wang Hongyuan, CPC Deputy Secretaries Xie Xuewen and Sun Xinli, together with officials from concerned functional departments of the University and representatives of the faculty and students, watched the performance.
On October 25, 2020, the list of winners of the 11th Liangxi Forestry Science and Technology Awards was announced; 19 projects led by Beijing Forestry University (BFU) won the Awards. Among the awarded projects, 10 were accomplished with BFU as the first completion unit, including one with first prize of Natural Science Awards, one with first prize of Technological Invention Awards, six with second prizes and two with third prizes of Science and Technology Progress Awards. Professor John Innes, Dean of the Faculty of Forestry at University of British Columbia of Canada, won the International Science and Technology Cooperation Award. He has been a leading figure of a major institution in longtime cooperation with BFU.
Recently, a landscape architecture planning and design team from Beijing Forestry University (BJFU) won the bid for the landscape design project of the core of Zhangjiakou Zone, the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games. The team, led by Professor Li Xiong, was composed of YAO Peng, XIAO Yao, YIN Hao and many other teachers and graduate students from the School of Landscape Architecture, BJFU.
Since the start of the new semester three weeks ago, there have been a great variety of cloud classrooms in Beijing Forestry University (BJFU) every day. Every good class is not accidentally successful, with every teacher experiencing online teaching from an uneasy style to a familiar and enlightening state. Behind all this, nearly 100 teaching staff have worked very hard to ensure university teachers to give their online lessons smoothly. They have made joint efforts with the Center for Teaching and Learning Development to fight the Covid-19 epidemic, and carried out a series of activities such as simulation teaching, online training, joint studies and researches by supervisors and teachers, teaching and learning consultation, experience exchange, etc.
On March 9, 2020 the provincial government administration office of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region announced that 20 national poverty-stricken counties were lifted out of poverty-stricken list, one of which is the Keyouqianqi (Horqin Right-wing Front Banner)—the designated recipient of aid from BFU under the National Targeted Poverty Alleviation Program. The decision notice was made according to the banner’s application followed by review by the municipal government, verification assessment of the provincial government and final approval by the poverty alleviation leading group of the autonomous region for announcement for soliciting public opinions according to the document “On Establishing the Withdrawal Mechanism of Poverty County ”(No.11 of 2018) issued by general administration office of CPC party committee and the provincial government administration office of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region
On March 13, 2020, the Standing Committee of the Convention on Wetlands appointed Professor Lei Guangchun of the School of Ecology and Nature Conservation at Beijing Forestry University(BFU) as Chair of the Scientific and Technical Review Panel(STRP) of the Convention. Previously, Professor Lei served as Senior Regional Adviser for the Asia-Oceania region at the Secretariat of the Convention from 2004 to 2008, as well as a scientific committee member of STRP from 2015 to 2017 and a technical committee member from 2018 to now. In 2019, he was an Independent Committee member of the Wetland City Accreditation. This is the first time that a committee member from China has taken the chair of the STRP, marking the international recognition of China’s scientific and technical progress in global wetland conservation and management.?
