On the morning of October 21st(Beijing Time), 2021 Freshman Orientation Meeting of BFU-UBC Joint Education Program and the UBC-UBG Scholarship Awarding Ceremony were held in BFU. Dr. Li Xiong, Vice president of BFU, and Dr. Robert Kozak, Dean of the Faculty of Forestry, University of British Columbia (UBC) addressed the meeting online. Academic and administrative representatives and students from both sides attended the meeting as well.
Li Xiong pointed out that BFU and UBC are forestry education and research institutions of critical importance in China and Canada, and over the past years both institutions have carried out a series of fruitful collaborations including the joint education programs, government-sponsored overseas study, long-term and short-term exchanges for students and faculty members, etc. Moreover, BFU and UBC have set up the Asia Pacific Forestry Education Coordination Mechanism, a significant international cooperation platform for forestry higher education, which has made irreplaceable contribution to promoting education cooperation in forestry between China and Canada and even among the entire Asia-Pacific region. He hoped that on the basis of the existing sound cooperation, the two sides could further integrate resources and forge ahead in an innovative and enterprising spirit to respond to the new challenges in the new circumstances, and active exploration could be made in cooperative educational programs and institutions as well as mutual exchanges for students and faculty members and other aspects for a continuous and strengthened partnership.
Robert Kozak acknowledged the importance of BFU’s contribution to the higher education cooperation in forestry between China and Canada. He pointed out that BFU is one UBC's most important international partners, and over the years both sides have conducted in-depth cooperation in talent cultivation, scientific research, social services and other fields which have generated remarkable results with the current two joint programs as highlighted landmarks. The UBC-UBG scholarship winners this year set excellent examples for the entire program students. He hoped that UBC and BFU could cooperate sincerely and continuously to explore new modes and paths of international cooperation for forestry higher education, so as to elevate the level and quality of cooperation to a new height.
The UBC Faculty of Forestry hosted the UBC-UBG Scholarship Awarding ceremony and 16 program students majoring in Biotechnology and Wood Science and Engineering from BFU were granted the scholarship. This scholarship is jointly established by the University of British Columbia (UBC) and the United Benefit Enterprise Group (UBG) to reward elite students with outstanding academic performance and comprehensive quality. This scholarship is not only a recognition and encouragement to the students, but also a recognition from the industry enterprises to the high quality of the joint education programs.

Ever since the formal enrollment was approved by the Ministry of Education in 2013, the BFU-UBC joint education programs have been adhering to the principle of rigorous education and scientific management. After nearly ten years of continuous exploration, the joint education programs have developed into successful models of BFU’s educational cooperative programs, and the enrollment and training quality remain high, leading the way for the future similar cooperative education programs.
