In current daily life, QR code has become a matter of common practice. However, in the closed loop of the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022, a QR code, from a 20-year-old girl’s hand,has won the praise of foreign friends.
Du An’na, a sunny and chipper girl, from Gansu province, is a junior undergraduate at Beijing Forestry University(BFU), who became a volunteer for the Beijing Winter Olympics and provided transportation consulting services to foreign journalists in Main Media Center(MMC).

In order to prevent the spread of the epidemic, the Beijing Winter Olympics adopts strict closed-loop management. The personnel can take specific vehicles which operate within the closed loop, to and from MMC, hotels and the venues of the three competition zones. For the purpose of digging more first-hand news materials, those foreign journalists need to travel frequently between various places, race against the clock, and juggle the fixed time of the game and their busy schedule. Therefore, a set of accurate bus timetable is indispensable for them. It may avoid major mistakes caused by different temporary situations, the adjustment of bus schedule, and the miss of the bus.
Of course, it also brings challenges to those traffic volunteers. At present, there are nearly 100 shuttle bus lines serving the media in the closed loop, not to mention those numerous bus stops. Sometimes, volunteers need to browse over 2000 lines of EXCEL to figure out the exact time of a vehicle at a station, which is a time-consuming process. At the same time, hundreds of consulting calls need answering every day, most of which are often very urgent. So it is also a difficult problem for volunteers to provide accurate information while pacifying those consultants.
In this case, Du An’na associated her previous experience in the student union. In order to save paper, she would upload the materials which need to be distributed to the students to the Internet, and then adopt a simple program to generate a QR code, which can be obtained by the students themselves by scanning the code. Can this method also serve those journalists reporting the Winter Olympics?
Such a simple idea became the big solution to the transportation service problem. Every night, volunteers collected the shuttle information of the next day, made a concise form, uploaded it to the web page, and pasted the generated QR code on the shuttle stop board. The journalists only need to scan the code with their mobile phones to capture the most comprehensive and accurate timetable, which greatly improved their travel efficiency.

A staff member of the U.S. Olympic Committee specially sent a thank-you letter and praised the QR code with "THRILLED" in capital letters. He also shared this QR code with his colleagues in Zhangjiakou and Yanqing competition zone. It is said that everyone took it as a treasure. The IOC transport delegation also mentioned and praised this small "invention" in the investigation report.
A small QR code is the epitome of her careful observation and enthusiastic service, and it is also the concrete embodiment of the creative spirit of Chinese volunteers. Today's young generation grow up in the era of technological empowerment. They are better at creating greater value through subtle acquisition in life, and are bound to amaze friends from all over the world.
Chinese volunteers are making contributions to the Winter Olympic Games and showing a new image of China to the world with their considerate and thoughtful service.
