“Care the Senior Month (2020)” kicks off on BFU campus

2020-11-18

In October, the heady fragrance of laurel blossoms wafted through the fresh air. From October 14th to 15th, the Retirement Office of BFU organized the retired people to carry out a fun entertainment activity on the theme of “Make life better through personally engagement in garbage sorting”. Corresponding events were simultaneously held in Bairuyuan Residential Quarters (phase I, phase II) as well as in the Western Residential Quarter on the University campus.

The activities include flying chess, throwing darts, and sandbags for garbage sorting. The rich diversity of activities not only popularizes the knowledge of garbage sorting, but also appeals to the interest of the retirees for getting involved. From time to time, hearty laughter and warm greetings would break out among the participating crowds. “I got each of them right!” “How about it? Isn’t that a good shot?” “Look at us, we aren’t that old yet, right?” “Old clothes are recyclable garbage.” “Would you please check what kind of rubbish this gas tank belongs to?” The elderly members of the community, who are mostly in their 60s, 70s, 80s and some even in their 90s (the oldest being 97), are all beaming with childlike smiles. The 92-year-old comrade enthusiastically sang the song You and Me with the volunteers at the event site.

Some of the retired teachers came to participate in the activities in little groups, some supported by their families, some in wheelchairs, and some on old age scooters. They expressed their gratitude for the University’s care for the elderly folks. It is of great significance and necessity to carry out activities with such prominent themes as the comprehensive implementation of waste sorting measures in the capital and the arrival of the University’s 68th anniversary. Especially, the activities are carried out in residential areas, which not only considers the participation of elderly comrades with poor mobility, but also improves the epidemic prevention and control. At the same time as the on-site waste sorting activities were going on, the Retirement Office also organized senior comrades to carry out online garbage sorting knowledge questionnaire.

More than 40 college student volunteers provided thoughtful and professional services for this event. The Retirement Office carefully prepared event souvenirs for the old comrades, and nearly 300 old comrades participated in the activity.

The October in 2020 marks the 11th “Care the Senior” theme event that is observed across the country, and the National Working Committee on Aging has identified the theme for the 2020 event as “carrying forward the tradition of filial piety, and building and sharing a friendly society for the elderly”. On the premise of ensuring that the activities of senior comrades are rich and colorful, and that related activities meet the requirements of epidemic prevention and control work, a wide range of events, take for instance the “Double Ninth Festival” collective birthday celebration, the “Health Stars”, the “Longevity Elderly” selection and recognition campaign and etc, will be carried out consecutively during the month. Arrangements concerning adjustments in the time of retiree pension issuance, organized physical examinations and other agendas have also been carefully prepared for.
