Management Innovation Team scored new progresses in estimates concerning biomass carbon stocks in forests in northeast Asia

2020-11-18

Recently, BFU Management Innovation Team has made new breakthrough in estimates concerning biomass carbon stocks in forests in Northeast Asia. This study is based on the research of “ New forest biomass carbon stock estimates in Northeast Asia based on multisource data ” and published on Global Change Biology (IF 8.55), a top-ranking journal in the field of environment and ecology. Weixue Luo, a doctoral student of Forest Manager Discipline in the School of Forestry, is the first author of the paper. Professors Chunyu Zhang and Jingjing Liang are the corresponding authors, and scholars from Purdue University, USA and Seoul National University, Korea also participate in the study. The research was mainly funded by the National Key Research and Development Project (No. 2017YFC0504005) led by Professor Xiuhai Zhao of the BFU.

The map of Carbon density of forest vegetation in Northeast Asia

For forest species, Northeast Asia is one of the richest temperate zones, which plays an important role in both regional and global Carbon cycles. However, it is unclear for the spatial patterns of biomass Carbon density and underlying factors in northeastern China, Republic of Korea and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. This study systematically integrates forest monitoring data, remote sensing data, climate data, and anthropogenic disturbances in Northeast China and Korea, thus producing a 1 km×1 km spatially resolved carbon density map of forest vegetation in Northeast Asia. It shows that the carbon stock of forest vegetation in Northeast Asia has increased by 20-46% over the past 20 years, and current biomass Carbon stock in northeastern China, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, and Republic of Korea are 2.53, 0.40, and 0.35 Pg C, respectively. It shows that afforestation and sustainable forest management are crucial for maintaining and enhancing the biomass Carbon stock of forest vegetation in Northeast Asia.

It is known that BFU Forest Management Innovation Team has been carrying out long-term researches on forest positioning and monitoring, and was selected by the Ministry of Education as one of the first national university Huang Danian-style faculty teams in 2018 and chosen as the National Forestry and Grassland Science and Technology Innovation Team of the State Forestry and Grassland Administration in 2019.
