The discipline of wood science and technology was founded by the famous wood scientist Mr. Shen Zongqi. It is one of the earliest disciplines or categories related to wood established in our country. In 1981, it was in the first batch of granting the right to confer master’s degrees by the State Council. In 1986, it was entitled to conferring doctoral degrees. In 2003, its post-doctoral research station was set up. In 2007, it became a key national discipline. It’s also a key discipline in the construction of “Project 211”(the Higher Education Reinvigoration Project 211), “Education Revitalization Action Plan”, and the “BFU Innovation Platform for Prioritized Academic Disciplines”.
The discipline enjoys six provincial and ministerial platforms, such as “MOE (the Ministry of Science and Technology) Key Laboratory of Wood Material Science and Application”, “MOE Engineering Research Center of Forest Biomass Materials and Energy”, and “Beijing Key Laboratory of Wood Science and Engineering” etc. Its faculty is also a cluster of high-level experts and scientists, including Chang Jiang Scholars, Director of MOE Education Steering Committee of Forestry Engineering, National Outstanding Teachers, National Outstanding Youth Fund Winners, National Hundred Outstanding Doctoral Dissertations Winner, Beijing Famous Teaching Teachers, and the First Prize winner in Beijing Basic Teaching Skills Competition. Among them, there are 16 professors, 16 associate professors, 19 lecturers, 3 senior laboratory technicians, and 2 laboratory technicians.
In recent years, the discipline has undertaken provincial and ministerial projects or even above, such as the “863 Program”(National High Technology Research and Development Program), the National Key Research and Development Project, the National Natural Science Foundation, and the major scientific research project of forestry public welfare industry, with a total funding of nearly 100 million yuan. It won the second prize of National Technological Invention Award, 6 provincial and ministerial science and technology awards, 3 provincial and ministerial teaching achievement awards. More than 1,000 high-level papers have been published, more than 100 national patents for invention have been authorized and 8 national and professional standards have been presided over and formulated. A number of scientific research achievements have been industrialized and applied into practice, such as “environmental-friendly wood-based panels and adhesive manufacturing technology”, “wood and bamboo drying equipment and technology”, “wood biomass pyrolysis liquefaction and the synthesis technology in bio-oil phenolic resin”, and “functional wood-based panel value-added manufacturing technology” etc., producing greater economic and social benefits and making great contributions to the scientific and technological progress and industrial development for China’s wood industry.
