The discipline of ecology originated from the discipline of forest science established in 1952. Professor Wang Zhenru, the famous botanist, and Academician Li Wenhua, the former chairman of the Chinese Ecological Society, were the founders of the discipline of ecology. It is one of the earliest doctoral programs in China and has cultivated the first doctor and post-doctor in national forestry system. At present, the discipline has become Beijing Key Discipline and SAF(State Forestry Administration, nowadays National Forestry and Grassland Administration, NFGA) Key Discipline. It also the key construction discipline of “Project 211” and“Innovation Platform for Prioritized Academic Disciplines”. There are 53 faculties, of which 52 full-time teachers have obtained doctor’s degrees. Among them, there are 1“Thousand Talent Program for Young Outstanding Scientist”supported by the Organization Department of CPC Central Committee, 2 winners of National Science Fund for Young Scholars, 3 recipients of the Government Special Allowance of the State Council, 5 MOE New Century Excellent Talents, 2 MEE(the Ministry of Ecology and Environment) Young Top-notch Talents, 2 Beijing Famous Teaching Teachers, 1 Beijing Outstanding Young Talents, 7 winners of Beijing Nova Program, and 2 Baogang Outstanding Teachers. Totally, there are 27 full-time professors, 16 associate professors and 9 lecturers.
After nearly 70 years’ construction and development, the discipline of ecology has gathered 3 secondary disciplines, namely forest ecology, wetland ecology, and ecological environmental engineering, and 1 institute of microbiology, establishing a relatively perfect and complete research team. The discipline has formed a comprehensive research system in wildlife, forest, grassland, and wetland etc . with forest ecology as its core and natural protection as its characteristics, and has produced a number of excellent achievements in the theory and application of forest ecosystem protection and restoration, wetland and water resources protection and management, water environment pollution and its control, and micro biological ecology etc., which has played a very positive role in the construction of national ecological civilization. At the same time, its cultivation program and scheme have been optimized gradually, which provides excellent talents for the country and for the relevant institutions and departments.
