The discipline of biology originated from the forest botany, forest zoology of the Imperial University of Peking (Jingshi Daxuetang, predecessor of Peking University) in 1902 and the forest plant physiology established later. In the past 110 years, after several generations’ unremitting efforts and construction, its academic teams, scientific researches, high-end innovation platforms, cultivation for high-level talents and social services have made great progress. Many innovative scientific research and teaching achievements have been achieved, which has made positive contributions to the national forestry construction and the development of related fields in Beijing. It enjoys the first “National Bases for the Cultivation of Talents in Fundamental Scientific Research and Teaching” in forestry colleges and universities.
In 2012, The discipline was approved as a Beijing Key Discipline. In 2015, it was approved as a first-class SFA(the State Forestry Administration, nowadays The National Forestry and Grassland Administration, NFGA) Key Discipline. It covers 5 second-level doctoral disciplines, namely botany, biochemistry and molecular biology, microbiology, cell biology, computational biology and bioinformatics, and 2 master’s disciplines, which are genetics and zoology. It has a high-quality academic team, led by academicians of the National Academy of Engineering with reasonable academic structure and Infinite Vitality.
