The discipline of philosophy of science and technology (ecological civilization construction and management) is a key discipline of State Forestry Administration(SFA, nowadays the National Forestry and Grassland Administration, NFGA). It has a long history. In 2003, it began to enroll graduate students(master-level) in philosophy of science and technology, and was upgraded to the first-level master’s program in philosophy in 2011. In 2012, it was approved to set up a second-level independent doctoral program in "ecological civilization construction and management" and began to enroll Ph.D. students in environmental philosophy. In 2016, it was identified as the SAF Key Cultivated Discipline.
Relying on the traditional advantages of Beijing Forestry University(BFU), which is known as the highest ecological and green university in this country, the discipline combines the professional standards with the BFU’s characteristics together, and highlights the importance of applications, forming two characteristic research directions, namely ecological civilization construction and the ideological history of forestry science and technology. It undertakes many great research projects, such as“ Collection of Great Classics of China · Forestry Records ”, the national major cultural publishing project, “ Compilation of Chinese Forest Classics and Records ” , the special project on science and technology basic work, and “China Encyclopedia in Forestry · Comprehensive Volume”, the national dictionary compilation and publication planning project. It also publishes other other influential works, including “ Collection of Great Classics of China · Forestry Records ”with 16 million words, “ Collection of Ecological Civilization”, “ Evaluation Report on Civilization Construction in Chinese Provinces ” and “ Evaluation Report on the C onstruction and D evelopment of E cological C ivilization in China ” etc.
At present, the discipline enjoys many academic platforms, such as the SFA Ecological Civilization Research Center, China Ecological Civilization Research Institute, and Forestry History Research Office at BFU, etc. It is also the affiliated discipline of Environmental Philosophy Professional Committee of the Chinese Society of Dialectics of Nature and the Forestry History Branch of the Chinese Forestry Society. All the achievements has produced high social reputation and great academic influence.
