Editor's note: Xi Jinping thought on ecological civilization is an important component of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era. It provides fundamental principles and guidance for action in the new era. It is of great significance to spread, explain and publicize Xi Jinping thought on eco-civilization internationally. In answer to the national project, Beijing Forestry University takes the construction of ecological civilization as the driving force and development foundation. 美丽中国

A Beautiful China

美丽中国是生态文明建设的重要目标，也是实现中华民族伟大复兴中国梦的重要内容。中共十八大把生态文明建设纳入中国特色社会主义事业“五位一体”总体布局，明确提出大力推进生态文明建设，努力建设美丽中国，实现中华民族永续发展。这标志着中国共产党对中国特色社会主义规律认识的进一步深化，表明了中国共产党加强生态文明建设的坚定意志和坚强决心。中共十九大深刻指出，生态文明建设是关系中华民族永续发展的根本大计，明确提出从2035 年到本世纪中叶，在基本实现现代化的基础上，再奋斗15 年，把中国建成富强民主文明和谐美丽的社会主义现代化强国。

A beautiful China is a major goal of the effort to build an  eco-civilization. It is also an important part of the grand  picture of national rejuvenation. The 18th National Congress  of the CPC listed ecological progress along with economic,  political, cultural and social progress in the Five-sphere  Integrated Plan as the goals for building Chinese socialism, vowing to promote ecological progress, build a beautiful China and achieve sustainable development of the Chinese nation. This also showed the CPC' s deeper understanding of socialist development and its firm resolution to build an eco-civilization.

The 19th National Congress of the CPC stated that building an eco-civilization is vital to sustain the Chinese nation' s development. It set the goal of developing China into a great modern socialist country that is prosperous, strong, democratic, culturally advanced, harmonious and beautiful by the mid-21st century, after achieving basic modernization by 2035.

具体而言，建设美丽中国就是要按照尊重自然 、顺应自然、保护自然的原则，秉持“既要金山银山，又要绿水青山”“绿水青山就是金山银山”的理念，贯彻节约资源和保护环境的基本国策，更加自觉地推动绿色发展、循环发展、低碳发展；就是要给自然留下更多修复空间，给农业留下更多良田，为子孙后代留下天蓝、地绿、水清的生产生活环境。

To build a beautiful homeland, China needs to follow the principle of respecting, accommodating and protecting nature,  and act on the understanding that lucid waters and lush  mountains are themselves invaluable assets. China will  continue its national policy on resource conservation and  environmental protection, and promote green, circular and low-carbon development. The initiative underscores the need  to leave more space for nature to renew itself, to keep more land for cultivation, and to bequeath a better working and  living environment to future generations so that they can be  blessed with blue sky, green fields and clear water.

中共十八大以来，中共中央把生态文明建设摆在全局 工作的突出位置，全面加强生态文明建设，开展了一系列根本性、开创性、长远性工作，坚决打赢打好污染防治攻坚战，统筹山水林田湖草沙治理，污染治理力度之大、制度出台频度之密、监管执法尺度之严、环境质量改善速度之快前所未有，生态文明建设从认识到实践都发生了历史性、转折性、全局性的变化。例如，实施山水林田湖草一体化生态保护和修复，开展国土绿化行动、全民绿色行动，推动长江经济带、黄河流域绿色发展，推进云南洱海治理、青海三江源保护，促进垃圾分类蔚然成风，实行最严格制度、最严密法治保护生态环境等。

Since 2012, the CPC central leadership has given priority  to eco-civilization in China' s overall work. Fundamental,  pioneering and far-sighted efforts have been devoted to pollution prevention and control, with a holistic approach to conserving mountains, rivers, forests, farmlands, lakes, grasslands and deserts.

There has been the highest intensity in pollution control,  the most new policies and measures of ecological conservation, the strictest supervision and law enforcement,  and the fastest improvement of the environment. Historic, far-reaching changes have been made to people’s awareness about eco-civilization and their own actions.

Relevant projects carried out include: integrated  protection and restoration for mountains, waters, forests, farmlands, lakes and grasslands, large-scale land greening campaigns, nationwide green environment campaigns,  eco-conservation of the Yangtze River Economic Belt and the  Yellow River Basin, improvement of the Erhai Lake in  Yunnan, and environmental protection in the Yangtze, Yellow and Lancang river sources in Qinghai. Waste sorting has been practiced across the country, and strict laws and regulations  on eco-environmental protection have been enforced.

中国梦的实现不以牺牲环境为代价，在发展经济的同时，保护好生态环境。建设美丽中国，有利于中国的长远发展，也将助推全球可持续发展，更有助于实现人类共同的梦想——保护美丽地球、建设绿色家园。

The Chinese Dream cannot be realized at the expense of  the environment. A beautiful China will not only benefit the  Chinese people, but also promote sustainable development  around the world. It will help with the building of a beautiful  earth and a better homeland for all.
