Editor's note: Xi Jinping thought on ecological civilization is an important component of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era. It provides fundamental principles and guidance for action in the new era. It is of great significance to spread, explain and publicize Xi Jinping thought on eco-civilization internationally. In answer to the national project, Beijing Forestry University takes the construction of ecological civilization as the driving force and development foundation. 统筹山水林田湖草系统治理

A Holistic Approach to Conserving the Mountains, Rivers, Forests, Farmlands, Lakes and Grasslands

山水林田湖草是一个生命共同体。人的命脉在田，田的命脉在水，水的命脉在山，山的命脉在土，土的命脉在林和草，这个生命共同体是人类生存发展的物质基础。习近平关于“山水林田湖草是生命共同体”的重要论述，进一步唤醒了人类尊重自然、关爱生命的意识和情感，为新时代推进生态文明建设提供了行动指南。

Mountains, rivers, forests, farmlands, lakes and grasslands are a community of life. The lifeline of humans rests with farmlands, that of farmlands with water, that of water with mountains, that of mountains with earth, and that of earth with forests and grasslands. This community of life is the material basis for the survival and development of humanity.

This vision of Xi Jinping raises people's consciousness of respecting nature and their affection toward life. It serves as a guide to action on building an eco-civilization in the new era.

统筹山水林田湖草系统治理，就是坚持山水林田湖草是生命共同体，按照生态系统的整体性、系统性及其内在规律，统筹考虑自然生态各要素、山上山下、地上地下、陆地海洋以及流域上下游，进行整体保护、系统修复、综合治理，增强生态系统循环能力，维护生态平衡。

This holistic approach follows the innate laws of the ecosystems to achieve systematic results of protection and restoration, giving consideration to a full range of ecological factors – up or down the mountains, above or under the ground, on the land and in the oceans, upstream and downstream of river basins, so as to increase the circulation of the ecosystems and maintain ecological balance.

统筹山水林田湖草系统治理，要深入实施重要生态系统保护和修复重大工程，增强生态产品生产能力，开展大规模国土绿化行动，加快水土流失和荒漠化、石漠化综合治理，扩大湖泊、湿地面积，保护生物多样性，着力扩大环境容量生态空间，全面提升自然生态系统稳定性和生态服务功能，筑牢生态安全屏障。

China will implement major projects to protect and restore key ecosystems, increase the production capacity of eco-products, conduct large-scale afforestation campaigns, accelerate comprehensive control of soil erosion, desertification and stony deserts, expand lakes and wetlands, and protect biodiversity. This will help enlarge the environmental carrying capacity, make all natural ecosystems more stable and better able to provide services, and safeguard national ecological security.
